Felony Basics

Have you already been accused of a felony in the state of New Jersey? If so, you need to contact a criminal defense lawyer in New Jersey immediately to discuss what to do next to best protect yourself. It is often very hard to know what to expect because you are likely unfamiliar with the misdemeanor and felony allegations that could affect the outcome of your case. Felony basics refer to crimes that are more serious than infractions or misdemeanors.

The Two Kinds of Crimes

The two primary types of crimes include misdemeanors and felonies. Felonies are serious crimes and any felony sentence will typically be associated with a minimum of a year in prison. Criminal laws and respective punishments are often tied to the severity of the alleged crime.

How Felonies Are Charged

Felonies are frequently sub-divided by their level of severity. A class A felony, for example, is considered much more serious than a class B felony. There are many different felonies that can be committed against another person and the names of these crimes could vary from one state to another.

Some of the most common felonies include; robbery, murder, rape, kidnapping, and assault. There can also be felonies against property. These names may also vary from one state to another, but in general include theft, burglary and arson. There will be varying degrees of punishment associated with felonies based on your state and the alleged severity of the crime. Felonies are typically punished by more than a year in prison and may carry a hefty fine.
