Facing Domestic Violence Charges in Atlantic City? Don’t Get Caught off Guard

It’s unfortunate to say so, but we’re all vulnerable to false allegations depending upon the accuser’s motivation. Someone points a finger at you and you‘re immediately going on the defensive even though you have haven’t necessarily done anything wrong. We saw it in the Duke Lacrosse case a few years back and now we may be seeing it at the University of Alabama, where a woman recently recanted her statement that 24-year-old Crimson Tide defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor assaulted her and damaged her property during a domestic dispute. The woman has since recanted her statement and was recently arrested for filing a false report.

Despite these new developments, the investigation is ongoing. Even though it’s common for domestic violence victims to take back their accusations due to fear, intimidation, blackmail or bribery, it is unclear as to whether or not that was the case here; the fact is, we may never know.

The point is, however, that anyone facing domestic violence charges, real or fabricated, needs a dedicated and qualified criminal defense attorney to defend them. Let’s face it, even if the charges are false, the chances are not in your favor that your accuser is likely to have a sudden crisis of conscience and recant their story. At least not in time to save your reputation. You need a lawyer that can help get to the heart of the issue and act on your behalf.

If you and your significant other were involved in a [nl_link id=’304′]domestic dispute[/nl_link] that got out of control, it’s important that you prepare for what often comes next. These blink-of-an-eye situations can wind up haunting you for the rest of your life, costing you your relationship, your job prospects and especially your freedom. Often in domestic disputes, it’s your word against your significant other’s. However, even when charges are filed, it can be significantly damaging to one’s life. Don’t get caught off guard by assuming you can take care of this yourself.

Everyone is entitled to a proper and well-prepared defense. John W. Tumelty has decades of experience helping clients deal with serious domestic violence violations.
