Question:What Are Your Career Goals And How Will A College Degree Help You Achieve Those Goals?
Priya Brahmbhatt – Absegami High School – Will Be Attending George Washington University
Although I am a high school senior, I have a growing interest in the medical field and hope to achieve my goal of becoming a physician. I want to dedicate my future to healing and supporting people in need as much as possible. Even though my goal has years until it becomes accomplished, I have started working towards it with a definite plan. I will attend the George Washington University in Washington D.C. as part of the University Honors Program this fall. At the George Washington University, I will major in biology on the pre-med track and minor in religious studies. At the university I plan to engage in lots of undergraduate research, volunteering, and take a chance to study abroad through medical organizations.
Due to my interest and previous experience in the research field, I plan to work in a neuroscience, cancer-related or biological research lab throughout my four years as an undergraduate student. The University Honors Program specifically matches its students up with research professors in the several different science departments, the George Washington Hospital, and institutions throughout the city. Also, during at least one summer as an undergrad, I aim to work at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, specifically on cancer. After my sophomore year, I will apply to the REU program, Research Experience for Undergraduates, with the hopes of traveling to different universities and meeting experts in their fields of research. Research will truly be one of the bigger parts of my college career.
Along with research, I have a strong passion of continuing my volunteerism throughout college and beyond. Volunteering at the George Washington Hospital will not only be humbling, but provide me with the practical experience of being in a professional hospital atmosphere as my future career would be. Also, I want to be a part of service clubs in Washington D.C. which help kids and poverty-stricken families. Since I have visited rundown villages and cities in India several times, I have strong determination to go out of my way to support people as much as possible in the United States. But I am also very interested in study abroad programs which are part of medical organizations. These programs bring medical relief to poor areas around the world and give students, such as I, a chance to visit and appreciate the tools, time and money our country has in terms of medicinal innovation.
Upon graduation, I hope to accomplish my goal of becoming a physician by successfully passing my medical examinations and enrolling into a medical school. All of the research, volunteerism, and travel will have given me a strong work ethic, positivity, and life-long experiences for my graduate studies. Therefore, I look forward to an exciting and hardworking next four years of college, where I plan to make the most out of my studies and experiences.
Jacy Craig – Atlantic City High School – Will Be Attending University Of Florida
As a senior in high school, I have my whole life ahead of me. I can be anything I want whether it’s a doctor, lawyer, or even an astronaut. I can take my life in any career choice I want, but there’s one in particular I have in mind. My goal is to become a civil engineer. It is the broadest spectrum of engineering, but I can do a lot with a degree in that particular engineering field. I can work with bridge design or water resources, and really help develop my community. My goal is to study at the University of Florida in a five-year program. By doing so, I would fast track my education to get a masters degree within the five years instead of just a bachelor’s degree in four. It would help boost my resume to secure a career as a civil engineer by having a higher degree present. On top of that, I want to participate in a cooperative education program. This would allow me to work in my field like obtaining my college degree, and really understand what I am doing.
A college degree would allow me to become a civil engineer. It is not a simple job, and requires a lot of math and science. By pursuing a degree in college, I would obtain all my requirements to follow my goal of becoming a civil engineer. Once I graduate, I hope to really help my community with water resources. The world is currently facing a major problem with the availability of fresh water. Only 2.5% of all water is fresh water and drinkable. Meanwhile, there are seven billion people in this world, and eventually we will run out of water for all of them. We are depleting our aquifers and water reserves faster than the water can be replenished. This will cause a major issue in getting fresh water to places that do not have easy access to it. As a civil engineer, I would work to solve this problem. My goal is to help those that need water and find a solution to the depleting fresh water. By working with desalination, getting salt out of salt water to make it drinkable, I hope to speed up this process to make fresh water more readily available. However, I can not do this without a college degree, which would allow me to follow my dreams as a civil engineer, and help those around me.
Hunter Irvin – Egg Harbor Township High School – Will Be Attending Chestnut Hill College
All throughout high school I have dedicated myself to my studies, maintaining a 3.8 GPA as well as a ranking in the top twenty percent of my class. In addition to my academics, I have also participated as a four-year varsity athlete which I believe emphasizes the value of hard work and discipline to an even greater extent. Considering the fact that my parents did not further their education beyond high school it has always been a dream of mine, and theirs’, that I attend college. I am fortunate to say that next year that dream will become a reality as I attend my first year at Chestnut Hill College where I will be working towards excelling in the classroom, as well as on the softball field with the ultimate goal of attaining a degree in Criminal Justice.
Having always been interested in law enforcement, it wasn’t until my senior year after taking criminal justice and psychology classes that I realized I wanted to further pursue that interest in college. Although I am unsure of the exact career path I will choose, I am leaning toward working with young adults who have strayed from the law encouraging them to make better choices in the future while hopefully steering them back on track as productive members of society.
Considering my education has always been my number one focus, it was imperative throughout my college search that I found a school with a great law enforcement program; I am excited that Chestnut Hill College will be able to provide me with just that. Their program is described as being “not just a cop-training program…there is an emphasis on real-world applications of restorative and social justice, as well as faculty who bring years of experience and courses that are tailored to experiential and service learning, students not only learn about what criminal justice is but how to live it.” While I believe that obtaining my Criminal Justice degree from Chestnut Hill College will prepare me for many obstacles, I also realize that the field I have chosen will be very challenging and stressful at times. I am confident, however, that with my drive and determination I will succeed as a member of the law enforcement community.
As my senior year draws to a close, I can honestly say that I have learned a lot about myself these past four years as I focused on bettering myself not only as a student, but most importantly, a person. I have come to appreciate a challenge and look forward to setting new goals with the idea that there will always be room for improvement. I strongly believe that Chestnut Hill College will provide me with all the tools and opportunities I’ll need as I begin to take steps into the real world, and the John W. Tumelty 2015 Academic Achiever College Scholarship would be extremely helpful in assisting me along my journey.
