Bath Salts & Other Synthetic Drugs are Illegal – Like Pot, Coke & Heroin

Heroin use is out of control in New Jersey and beyond. In fact, police recently crushed a major heroin drug ring in Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean counties; 22 people were charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin.

However, known hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine are not the only games in town for teenagers who want to “check out” of the realities and pressures of school, social lives and more. Twenty-six synthetic drugs were added to the U.S. Controlled Substances Act making some things, such as bath salts, just as illegal as traditional street drugs like marijuana.

There are two types of synthetic drugs that fall into the categories covered by the Controlled Substances Act:

  • Chemically engineered “cannabinoids,” which offer the same type of effects one gets from smoking pot and
  • Chemically engineered “cathinones,” which act like amphetamines and offer the type of high one gets from doing cocaine or ecstasy. Bath salts are cathinones.
