Obama Administration Wants to Reduce Gun Violence, Investigates “Smart Guns”

South Jersey Gun Crime LawyersPresident Obama recently announced that the federal government will be investigating “smart gun” technology and then requiring law enforcement agencies throughout the US to buy and use smart guns. The hope is that smart gun technology can be used to reduce shootings and gun-related violence in the U.S.

Currently, the Defense Department already works with gun manufacturers to test smart gun technology at the US Army Aberdeen Test Center, which is located in Maryland. Those joint efforts will continue under the new policy, with the federal government now considering the possibility of mandating the use of smart guns by law enforcement.

Smart gun technology typically includes certain devices that make it more difficult for a gun user to accidentally fire the weapon. Additionally, smart guns are easier to trace, which could help when a gun goes missing.

Obama announced the new gun violence prevention measures in a post on Facebook. In the post, Obama referred to the policies as “common-sense steps” that will help to prevent the tragic loss of life in gun-related incidents. Obama stressed that the government “should be doing everything we can to save lives and spare families the pain and unimaginable loss too many Americans have endured.”

Another policy that the Obama Administration is promoting is the implementation of a federal background check system that will allow federal agencies to share mental health records when a person attempts to buy a handgun or other firearm. The focus on mental health is important because it has been determined that many mass shootings are committed by individuals who suffer from mental health problems.

The new policies come on the heels of Obama’s plan to expand federal background checks for all purchases of firearms by removing what is known as “the gun show loophole” and requiring private sellers of guns to conduct background checks on potential buyers.
