Lawmakers Move to Change Juvenile Justice System with More Child-Friendly Reforms

Prosecutors in New Jersey are notoriously tough on serious crime – even going so far as to move to try juveniles as adults with the potential penalty of jail time. This can be a nightmare for an entire family, especially because oftentimes kids do things without understanding the full ramifications. Before they know it, a bad judgment call or dumb mistake puts their freedom at risk.

Fortunately, under new reforms proposed by Garden State lawmakers, drastic changes are in the works with regard to how juveniles charged with criminal offenses can be tried, sentenced and confined as adults. These measures include changing the age at which children can be tried as adults from 14 to 15 and delaying the transition to adult prison.

Even if these new reforms pass, your son or daughter can still be at risk for considerable penalty under the law. If your child has committed a serious crime, contact an experienced and qualified juvenile defense attorney to help minimize punishment and make sure they’re treated fairly.

Under New Jersey’s current laws, prosecutors may feel as though they have license to make an example of your child and push for the maximum penalty. A knowledgeable legal advocate can ensure that your child’s best interests are being weighed against the severity of their offense, and fight to have their case stay in juvenile court.

Everyone makes mistakes and, while some carry heavier consequences than others, everyone deserves a second chance. At the end of the day, your child is just that — a child. The best way to help them learn from their mistakes while putting their indiscretions behind them is to enlist the help of a qualified lawyer as soon as possible to fight any criminal charges. Whether it’s underage drinking, vandalism, shoplifting or any other offense, talk to a skilled Atlantic County, NJ criminal defense lawyer who will fight to get that second chance for your child.
