Getting on with Your Life: Why You Need an Attorney for Traffic Violations

Unaddressed traffic tickets can hover over your head like an anvil on a wet paper towel and wind up crashing down at the least opportune time. Imagine driving to work, being pulled over for a broken taillight only to be taken to jail because your license has been suspended for non-payment of fines or surcharges. By the time you get to the courthouse, post bail and pay your fine, you’ve already paid hundreds of dollars more than you needed to and lost at least a half a day’s worth of work.

Many put off paying their tickets because they either can’t pay, disagree with the summons or just flat out forget. If you’re facing traffic charges, talk to an attorney and deal with the issue head on. Tickets do not “go away.” In fact, they mount up – as do surcharges and motor vehicle points. If you fail to appear in court, the judge can put out a warrant for your arrest. A simple traffic ticket can turn into a very costly and time consuming event. Further, you may find yourself without driving privileges – there are many traffic violations that can result in license suspension and even jail time.

The popular HBO series “Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver humorously probed a not-so-funny issue on its March 22 episode: municipal violations and how they can seriously disrupt people’s lives. Some people think municipalities use traffic tickets to generate income. Whether they do or not, the real issue is this: if you received a ticket, you need to take it seriously. If you have a reasonable explanation, a seasoned lawyer can represent you in court and present your case to a judge. Also, a lawyer can negotiate with the prosecutor in an effort to get your ticket downgraded – saving you fees, points and jail time.

Did you know that 64 percent of New Jersey drivers that lose their licenses lose their jobs as result of their inability to get to work? A knowledgeable attorney can help you steer clear of this snowball effect and help you minimize the time and money that your infraction costs you, whether it’s a DUI, a speeding ticket, reckless driving or anything else.

You’re time is valuable. We know that. It’s understandable if you feel dealing with traffic tickets is a time suck you can’t afford. However, if you’re facing charges for a motor vehicle infraction, John W. Tumelty is ready to help you understand your rights and options under the law and help you negotiate with the prosecutor for the most favorable outcome possible. A little bit of time today can save you much more later. [nl_link id=’272′]Call us[/nl_link] today for a consultation.
