You know what they say about how even the mighty must fall? Take Dr. John Strobeck, MD, one of the first North Jersey cardiologists to perform a procedure known as balloon angioplasty. He achieved relative local fame for this feat, along with being one of the first doctors to use Vesnarinone, an experimental drug that was thought to reduce the risk of death in congestive heart failure patients. Thirty years later, in April 2014, he was indicted by New Jersey’s Passaic County Prosecutor on five counts of fourth degree criminal sexual contact. It is alleged that he fondled five female patients.
Strobeck is a cardiologist with a practice in Hawthorne, New Jersey. The indictment came after one of the victims made a complaint to the Hawthorne Police Department accusing the doctor of improperly touching her during medical exams. After police investigated, they found four more women also said they were fondled by the doctor.
If he is convicted on all five counts of criminal sexual contact, Strobeck could face up to eight years in prison.
While this case is taking place a few hours from Atlantic and Cape May counties, it should be noted that New Jersey laws regarding criminal sexual contact are extremely strict. Strobeck is facing a fourth degree criminal charge, punishable by up to 18 months in jail, for each count. All criminal charges are serious, but those of a sexual nature are extremely damaging. This type of criminal record has an immensely negative impact on employment and housing options, and it can ruin the offender’s reputation for life.
A criminal defense attorney with significant experience in defending clients accused of sex crimes is a defendant’s best chance at a favorable outcome. As with all criminal cases, the defendant is innocent until proven guilty. However, courts look quite unfavorably at criminal sexual contact, sexual assault and all sex-related crimes. Experienced legal representation is imperative in these cases.
