Do You Live in One of New Jersey’s “Most Dangerous Towns?”

Movoto Real Estate, an online company, released a list of “New Jersey’s Most Dangerous Towns.” South Jersey municipalities Atlantic City, Bridgeton, Lindenwold and Woodbury made the list, based on the FBI’s 2013 Uniform Crime Report.

The report analyzed towns with a population of at least 10,000 and divided crimes into four categories; murder, violent crime, property crime and total crime. According to the survey, violent crimes, murders, and property crimes each were weighted at 30 percent vs. “all other crimes” weighted to make up the remaining 10 percent.

The final top 10 list of Most Dangerous Towns in New Jersey:

1. City of Asbury Park

2. City of Atlantic City

3. City of Newark

4. City of Bridgeton

5. Township of Irvington

6. City of Woodbury

7. City of Trenton

8. City of Orange

9. City of Paterson

10. Borough of Lindenwold

Movoto names Atlantic City, Newark and Asbury Park as the three highest crime areas on the list, but said, “This ranking is not a critique of police practices or effectiveness. It is simply an analysis of where crimes occurred.”

For some perspective, residents of Atlantic City have a one in 11 chance of becoming a crime victim, while residents of suburban Chatham Township in Northern NJ have a one in 254 chance.

The FBI report noted, “These rough rankings provide no insight into the numerous variables that mold crime in a particular town. Consequently, they lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting communities and their residents.”  This is because, at the end of the day, being a victim of crime is somewhat out of your control.
