Atlantic City Police Look for Clues in Fatal Shooting of Man from Camden County, NJ

South Jersey Criminal AttorneysLaw enforcement in Atlantic City NJ is currently investigating the fatal shooting of a Camden County man who had come to the city.

The tragic incident unfolded a short time before 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of South Carolina Avenue and Baltic Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey. According to a statement issued by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, the victim was walking along South Carolina Avenue in AC when someone used a firearm to shoot and kill him.

The Atlantic City Police Department received a report of gunshots being fired and immediately dispatched police officers to the area. When AC cops got to the scene, they found the victim lying on the pavement and non-responsive. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders.

Although medical examiners will need to conduct an autopsy in order to officially declare the exact cause of the victim’s death, but it is likely that his death will be ruled a homicide that was caused by a gunshot wound.

The victim was later identified as a 20-year-old man who resided in Somerdale, NJ.

At this time, authorities have not been able to determine the identity of the shooter. Moreover, law enforcement officials are unclear about a possible motive for the fatal shooting. If and when Atlantic County detectives can identify and locate the culprit, it is likely that criminal charges for first degree murder would follow. In New Jersey, a first degree felony typically carries a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars. However, murder is treated differently by the NJ Criminal Code: a conviction on first degree murder charges could result in life imprisonment, with a minimum mandatory term of incarceration of 35 years in New Jersey State Prison.
