A New Jersey DUI Conviction is Costly in More Ways than One

It’s holiday time and, for many, that means plenty of celebrations. Chance are, where there are parties there is booze. Generally speaking, there is nothing wrong with sharing some good cheer with family, friends and co-workers. However, not knowing when to say “when” with alcohol leads to serious DWI/DUI traffic stops throughout New Jersey.

According to N.J.S.A. 39:4-50 (New Jersey’s drunk driving statute), it is not permissible to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of more than .07 percent. Anything over .08 may result in a DWI arrest. The important thing to know is that every person’s body metabolizes alcohol differently. You may be able to drink three beers and be legally sober, while your friend may be buzzed after one glass of wine.

Here’s something that is the same for all drivers: if you are stopped and charged with drunk driving, the consequences of a conviction are harsh and often life-altering. Even for first-time offenders, you can lose your driving privileges, be forced to pay significant fines and surcharges, have to deal with an ignition interlock device being installed on your vehicle and, you may even be sentenced to jail.

Some people think it’s not possible to avoid jail time if they are facing drunk driving charges. This is not necessarily true. With an experienced DWI/DUI defense lawyer on your side, there is a possibility of getting the charges downgraded and possibly even dismissed. The police may not have had a real reason to initiate a traffic stop in the first place. If that’s the case, any evidence presented in court against you would be inadmissible.

DWI charges are serious and require the legal guidance of a knowledgeable lawyer who will protect your rights and negotiate with the prosecutor on your behalf.
